Canadian Pacific 283405 is a 40' overhead ice bunker refrigerator car built by National Steel Car in 1954. Compared to end ice bunkers on traditional refrigerator cars, the overhead bunkers can maintain a more uniform temperature throughout the entire car for a longer length of time — especially when sitting still. These cars were popular with Canadian railroads which handled a lot of export meat shipments where loaded cars might have to sit at a port for a while before being unloaded.
Spotting features of these cars are the eight hatches along the roof of the car, shorter door height due to the overhead bunkers, and a permanent charcoal heater mounted under the car.
